Muck Away in Guildford
Spoil Off Site by the Load, So the Dig Keeps Moving.
Excavated soil, clay and subsoil from footings, basements, drives and gardens, taken away by the load. Inert and non-inert spoil, sixteen tonnes a visit, priced per load rather than by the tonne.
Muck away
Muck Away in Guildford, Explained.
Muck away is the removal of excavated material from a site: the spoil from footings and trenches, the clay from a basement dig, the subsoil from a driveway or a levelled garden. It is heavy, it piles up quickly, and until it is gone the next trade cannot start. Our grab lorries take it away by the load, sixteen tonnes at a time, so the digger keeps digging.
We work with groundworkers, builders and developers across Guildford, Godalming, Chobham and Bagshot, and with homeowners having an extension, a driveway or a garden done. On a longer build we can set up regular muck away collections around your programme, and on a one-off job we can usually be with you the same day or the next.
Inert spoil is taken to a licensed transfer station to be screened and recycled into secondary aggregate. Non-inert and mixed loads are accepted too, provided they are kept free of the items we cannot carry. Every load leaves with a waste transfer note, and every load is priced before the lorry moves.

What spoil weighs
The Material Decides How Much Fits on the Lorry.
A cubic metre of clay weighs half as much again as a cubic metre of topsoil, so the same size pile can be one load or two. These are the trade's rough figures for loose material, and the right-hand column is how many cubic metres one load takes.

Where the spoil goes
From the Dig to the Next Site's Sub-Base.
- 1
The Dig
The digger stops and the spoil is where it fell. We arrive when you tell us the pile is ready.
- 2
Loaded From the Road
The arm reaches over the hoarding or the fence. Sixteen tonnes is on the lorry in about twenty minutes.
- 3
Licensed Transfer Station
Every load is tipped at a licensed site and weighed in. Your waste transfer note follows by email.
- 4
Screened and Recycled
Inert spoil is screened into secondary aggregate. The next site gets it back as Type 1 and fill.
What counts as muck away
What Counts as Muck Away and How We Handle It.
Anything that has come out of the ground. Tell us roughly how much and what it is, and we will send the right lorry.
- 01
Footings and Trenches
The clay and subsoil from extension footings, drainage runs and service trenches.
- 02
Basements and Reduced Levels
Bulk dig spoil taken away in a steady stream of loads so the excavator never waits.
- 03
Driveways and Patios
The soil and old sub-base from a driveway dig-out before the Type 1 goes in.
- 04
Garden Levelling
Topsoil and subsoil from terracing, ponds and levelling work, lifted over the fence.
- 05
Hardcore and Rubble
Broken concrete and brick from the same dig, taken in the same load or a separate one.
- 06
Bring the Base Back
MOT Type 1 or crushed concrete delivered on the return trip, so the sub-base arrives as the spoil leaves.
Work out your load
How Many Tonnes Is That? Work It Out in Ten Seconds.
Measure the pile, or the area you need to dig out or fill, and the calculator turns it into tonnes and tells you which lorry it needs. Then send the figures straight to us on WhatsApp and we will price it.
- Soil weighs about 1.3 tonnes a cubic metre loose, clay nearer 1.8, so the material matters.
- The eight-wheeler carries sixteen tonnes; the mini grab up to nine.
- A guide to quantity only. The price comes from us, per load, with no extras.
About 6.0 cubic metres. That fits on the mini grab in one trip, or on an eight-wheeler with room to spare.

Why us
How Muck Away Works on the Day.
Tell Us the Dig
A photo of the pile and where the lorry can park is enough to price it. Clay weighs more than topsoil, so we allow for it.
We Arrive When the Digger Stops
Same day or next day where we can, or booked around your programme on a longer job.
Sixteen Tonnes in Twenty Minutes
The arm reaches 7.6 metres over the hoarding or the fence, and the driver does the loading.
Screened and Recycled
Inert spoil goes back into secondary aggregate at a licensed transfer station. Your waste transfer note follows by email.
Good to know
Muck Away, Your Questions Answered.
How much muck away does one grab load take?
Up to sixteen tonnes, which is roughly ten cubic metres of clay or twelve of loose topsoil. A typical single-storey extension footing dig is one load; a basement is a steady run of them.
Do you take clay?
Yes. Clay is the heaviest common spoil, so we allow for it in the price and in how full the lorry can be loaded.
Can you take mixed spoil?
Inert spoil and mixed loads are both fine, as long as the pile is kept clear of asbestos, plasterboard, fridges, tyres, batteries, paint, oil and gas bottles.
How is muck away priced?
Per load, agreed before the lorry leaves the yard. There is no weighbridge ticket afterwards and no permit to pay for.
Can you do regular collections on a longer build?
Yes. Tell us the programme and we will book the lorries around it, with the option of bringing MOT Type 1 or crushed concrete in on the same runs.
