Guildford · Grab lorry hire
Two sizes of grab lorry, both loaded from the road by our own drivers. The eight-wheeler for full loads and open roads, the mini grab for narrow lanes and smaller jobs.
Grab lorry hire
A grab lorry is a tipper with a hydraulic arm and a clamshell bucket mounted behind the cab. The driver parks, unfolds the arm, and loads the lorry from the road without anyone touching a shovel. It is the lorry that has replaced the skip on most building sites, and it is the lorry we run every day across Guildford and west Surrey.
Our main lorries are eight-wheelers: thirty-two tonnes gross, sixteen tonnes of payload, about nine metres long, with an arm that reaches 7.6 metres. For roads and drives the big lorry cannot get down we send the mini grab, a four-wheel lorry on a lighter chassis that carries up to nine tonnes and can take two materials at once.
Every driver holds a Category C or CE licence and a CPC card, the lorries are insured to ten million pounds of liability cover, and every load is carried under our Environment Agency waste carrier registration. Grab lorry hire is priced per load, quoted over the phone from a photo.
The fleet
The workhorse
For the lanesWill the arm reach it?
Move the pile along the drive to see whether we can load it from the road. Most drives, front gardens and side returns are well within reach, walls and fences included.
The arm reaches 7.6 metres from where the lorry parks, so a pile 5 metres in is loaded straight from the road. Walls, fences and hoardings up to about two metres are no problem.
The two lorries
Most jobs get the eight-wheeler. The mini grab is for the roads it cannot get down and the loads it would be too big for.
Sixteen tonnes a load, 7.6 metres of reach, about nine metres long. The workhorse for footings, muck away and site clearances.
Four wheels, up to nine tonnes, about seven metres long with a tighter turning circle. Narrow lanes, small drives and lighter loads.
Both lorries load from the road, lifting over walls, fences and hoardings, so nothing is barrowed through the house.
The mini grab has a dividing plate, so soil can go in one half of the bed and hardcore in the other.
The same lorries bring MOT Type 1, crushed concrete, sand and topsoil to site, tipped or placed with the grab.
Category C or CE licences, CPC cards, and a driver who has loaded thousands of piles before yours.

Why us
The driver does the work. Your labour stays on the job instead of filling a skip.
Piles behind walls, fences and site hoardings are no problem for a 7.6 metre arm.
A skip full of soil is limited by weight long before it is full. A grab load is not.
No permit, no skip on the drive, no waiting for a collection.
Good to know
Two. The eight-wheel grab lorry carries up to sixteen tonnes with a 7.6 metre reach, and the four-wheel mini grab carries up to nine tonnes with about six metres of reach and a tighter turning circle for narrow roads.
The eight-wheeler is about nine metres long and around 2.5 metres wide before the mirrors. The mini grab is about seven metres long. If you are unsure whether the road or drive will take it, send us a photo.
Yes. Both lorries deliver MOT Type 1, crushed concrete, ballast, sharp sand and topsoil, and we can bring materials in and take waste away on the same visit.
Per load. You know the price before the lorry leaves the yard, and a load that takes twenty minutes costs the same as one that takes forty.
Guildford, Godalming, Chobham and Bagshot are our main areas, and most of west Surrey is within half an hour of our yard at Mayford. If you are not sure, give us a call.
